Toxic Lyrikali: Kenya's Next Rap Giant Is Already Going Viral

Kenyan hip-hop has another name the rest of Africa needs to know: Toxic Lyrikali.

While much of the international conversation about African music continues to center on Afrobeats and Amapiano, Kenya's rap scene is producing its own new generation—and Toxic Lyrikali is quickly becoming difficult to ignore.

The Kenyan rapper has built the kind of momentum that can't be explained by one lucky viral record.

His breakout song “Chinje” has passed 20 million YouTube views, while tracks including “Backbencher,” “Thugnificent” and “Sick” have also generated millions of views.

More recently, Toxic's “Hongo Ya Karao Vol. II,” featuring Mauru Gwash and Kapitani, reached the top of Kenya's YouTube trending music chart. At the same time, Zzero Sufuri's “Otero,” featuring Toxic Lyrikali, was sitting right behind it.
